The eyepiece with graduated scale is used for measuring the size of samples and their structure in linear units: millimeters or microns. The eyepiece is mounted in place of a standard 10x eyepiece. The graduated scale is located on the plane of the field diaphragm with values equal to 0.1 mm. Eyepiece diameter: 30 mm.

Setup

Before measuring, you need to calibrate the eyepiece scale for each magnification of the objective that will be used. Requires a calibration slide – a table top micrometer with scale. For a stereoscopic microscope it is recommended to use a calibration slide with a scale division of 0.1 mm. It is necessary to place the slide on the stage and then adjust the focus of the microscope on the scale. The eyepiece is rotated in the eyepiece tube until the scales of the slide and eyepiece are aligned parallel to each other.

Calculation of the eyepiece scale value for each objective magnification

The calculation for each objective magnification is carried out according to the formula: E=TL/A, where: E is the division of the eyepiece scale; T is the division of the stage micrometer scale marked on the stage micrometer (0.01 mm); L is the number of values on the stage micrometer; A is the number of eyepiece scale values.

The resulting eyepiece scale division values for each objective magnification should be recorded.

Calculation of the true linear dimension of an object

When measuring an object, you must first count the number of ocular scale divisions covered by the object. The result will then be multiplied by the scale value previously calculated for the lens in use. The resulting value will be the true linear value of the object.
